Under New York law certain vaccines are mandated for admission to public schools unless there is a serious medical reason for the child not to be vaccinated as documented by a physician. In looking at the code the chicken pox (varicella) is now one of them. Strangely enough you can also gain an exemption on the grounds of religious beliefs but how you would do that is not very clear.
