Children and Depression
« on: August 19, 2009, 07:45:34 AM »
I have been watching my nephew this week who is six. His parents divorced last year.He seems very quiet and withdrawn and uninterested in playing. He watches TV and plays video games and does not talk to my boyfriend and I like he used to. Can children be depressed and how can I tactfully discuss this with his mother, my sister? Advice welcome please.

Children can certainly become depressed, just like adults. It may be though that this little guy is, or is just rather sad over his parents split. I don't think you have to beat around the bush too much, simply tell your sister you are concerned about how much your nephew has changed and gently suggest that she at least try to talk to him about his feelings.

Yes, please just be gentle. If you come on too strong it will probably not be well accepted. When I got divorced my co worker lectured me about all kinds of things I should be doing for my kids and some were quite extreme. It resulted in that I no longer speak to a person I used to be quite friendly with. You are right to be concerned but please be tactful and not accusatory.
